From the Moment we opened in January of 1998, Rancho San Marcos Golf Course has been a classic. Designed by legendary golf architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., this course became the talk of the community by offering a world class golf course on 300 spectacular acres. This course is both a treasure to behold and a strategic challenge that no golfer can resist with a staff of individuals dedicated to ensuring your golf experience is the finest it can possibly be.
This 6,939-yard par 71 course offers stunning views of the Santa Ynez River Valley, distant furrowed peaks, and eagles soaring above Lake Cachuma – without a trace of urban development in sight. Rancho San Marcos, tucked deep into the valley floor of the Santa Ynez Mountains, has kept the essence of the old ranch which was located here since the Spanish land grant of 1804. This simple and pastoral setting combined with the classic game of golf, makes Rancho San Marcos the ideal location to forget the troubles of the world and reminisce on a quieter, simpler time.
Rancho San Marcos is conveniently located 15 minutes west of the Santa Barbara beaches, and 15 minutes east of the wine country community of Santa Ynez and Danish village town of Solvang.
For the adventuresome, the surrounding valley offers hiking, horseback riding; wine tasting and unique shopping in the quaint neighboring communities. River Course - A Friendly Course With Spectacular Views!
River Course at the Alisal presents golfers with breathtaking panoramas of the brilliant hues of the foothills and the Santa Ynez Mountains and Valley. River Course features four lakes and often follows the meandering path of the Santa Ynez River. Gentle mounds define the manicured fairways and bentgrass greens accented by mature live oaks, native sycamores and elderberry trees.
Robert Scarpati, PGA Member at the River Course, describes the magnificent course as "extremely playable for all levels."
At 6,830 yards, the par-72 course is challenging but not punishing. This strategic placement of a variety of hazards rewards length and accuracy without severely penalizing casual and recreational golfers. The moderate central California climate and meticulous maintenance provide excellent year-round playing conditions.
The fairways appear wide but mounding along the sides requires accuracy to avoid side hill lies. Some of the tees are elevated offering sweeping vistas of the fairways below. The greens are large and have moderate undulations making them a delight to putt, and the club keeps them consistent and true.
A most dramatic and demanding hole is the 438-yard, par-4 seventh that features a challenge everywhere you look.
The world-class Ojai Country Club was one of the first great golf courses in Southern California. Designed and originally built in 1923 under the direction of George C. Thomas, Jr. and Billy Bell, the course was hailed as "a marvel of golfing architecture." Thomas, who also designed courses at the Riviera, Bel-Air and Los Angeles country clubs, had two initial considerations for the Ojai course: "...that the average golfer could enjoy his round without too great a penalty, and that a test must be afforded requiring the low-handicap man to play fine golf in order to secure pars."
In its eight decades, the golf course has been made even more famous by the pros and celebrities who have chosen it for exhibition play and competition. Jimmy Demaret and Doug Sanders have been resident pros, while Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Will Smith, Kevin Costner, Michael Douglas and a host of Hollywood stars have visited over the years to play the course. The Inn has hosted seven Senior PGA TOUR events that brought legendary superstars such as Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Gary Player, Tom Weiskopf, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Ben Crenshaw and others to challenge our historic course and two EMC2 Golf Skills Challenges, as seen on NBC.
The 18-hole golf course and the greens were considerably toughened in 1988 by famous course designer Jay Morrish. At 6,292 yards from the blue tees, it is a par 70 course with six par 4's over 400 yards, and three par 3's of over 200 yards. The Ojai Valley Inn & Spa has been selected for membership in Great Golf Resorts of the World.
In 1999, this luxury golf resort reintroduced the "Lost Holes." Two original golf holes designed by George C. Thomas, Jr. in 1923 were lost when the course was redesigned following WWII. These two holes have been restored and brought back within their original layout. We hope you find the course to be challenging and a rewarding golfing experience no matter what your level of play. Come to Ojai, California for a golf vacation and experience firsthand one of the world's championship golf courses.
